2024-2025 Math Placement

Dear CPS Students & Families,

Hello and happy holidays! As we gear up for the season and look ahead to the next school year, the CPS Mathematics Department is excited to share some important info about math in high school.

Here is some information for the 2024-2025 school year:

1. Strong Start in 9th Grade: Success in Algebra I is key for your scholar's future math journey. It's the building block for more advanced courses later on. In Algebra 1, students will be asked to create and interpret multiple forms of functions including linear, quadratic, and exponential equations. For this reason, we recommend not skipping any math courses.

2. Placing out of Algebra 1: If your child will have completed Algebra 1 by the start of the 2024-25 school year, there will be a form that will be shared in the near future, which will ask you to include specific documentation of completion for Algebra 1. Exemplars of documentation can include: Transcripts, Grade Reports, and/or Recommendation Letters. For those families that are currently enrolled at an Upper School in CPS, here is a link to more information regarding the Bridge to Algebra Program. Given that the program is CPS Facilitated, you will not need to submit any documentation once your child completes the program.

3. Course Sequences: We've got pathways that guide students through many different forms of mathematics including statistics, calculus, and even Computer Science. We take great pride in preparing our scholars for amazing opportunities like AP Statistics, AP Calculus, Applied Mathematics, Money & Power, AP Computer Science, or even Machine Learning & AI. Feel free to review the pathways here, please note it is being currently updated to better reflect the CRLS experience. You will learn more at the Rising 9th grader info session! As mentioned above, we recommend scholars do not skip any math courses and will no longer be accepting documentation of external programs.

4. Want to learn more: Check out the course catalog and if you have questions or need a different placement, we're here to help!

We wish you a joyful winter break and a fantastic start to the New Year. Looking forward to an exciting and successful 2024-2025 school year for your rising 9th grader!

Wishing you and your loved ones all the best during this time,

Josh Marden
