From the Principal

August 6, 2018

Greetings Parents, Guardians, and Family members!

I hope you are all enjoying the summer months and getting some much needed time outside! We are starting to prepare for the 2018-2019 school year which starts for all high school students on Tuesday, September 4th. Mailed with this letter you will find our opening week schedule as well as the schedule for the normal school week which we have updated for the new school year. We will be hosting an opening week potluck for all students, staff, and families on Friday, September 7 at 1PM at HSEP. We hope to see you all there!

I am excited to share with you all changes that we are making to HSEP in 2018-2019. First, our school has officially adopted our “Vision of a Graduate.” This new vision for HSEP will focus on students becoming Community Members, Self-Aware, Future-Focused, Professional and Dynamic Thinkers by the time they graduate from the school. In order to have students be more reflective of this process students will be completing self-reflections weekly where they will have an opportunity to identify how their learning in that week has connected to our new vision. In addition, our senior students will be taking classes in the fall directly connected to these characteristics and in the spring participating in an internship. In May seniors will present a year long Capstone project that will be tied to their learning, the Vision, and their internships.

We are also focusing more on our advisory program this year. Each student has been assigned an advisor for the school year. This staff member will meet weekly with your student one on one to discuss their personalized learning plans, goals and academics. The staff person will also be your point person and should be reaching out at the beginning of the year to determine how best to communicate with you and how often you would like to receive communications. We are hoping that this program will provide more support for students, and increase our engagement with families.

As with last year we will continue to work with students individually and as a whole school on their attendance. Cambridge Public Schools is dedicated to improving chronic absenteeism in our student population and at HSEP we are committed to working collaboratively with families to get creative to ensure students are coming to school regularly and on time. We are hoping to work with you this year to set realistic goals for your student so that they are able to find success in school and reach their desired post-secondary goals.

Lastly, we are excited to share with you that all of our students will be receiving a chromebook this year that they will be able to take to and from school with them to complete their coursework. HSEP will be hosting a chromebook sign out week the first week of school where families can come in with their student to sign agreements with the ICTS department regarding the devices. These devices are going to really enhance the educational experience of students at HSEP.

On behalf of the faculty at HSEP we are very excited to see all of you this year and look forward to collaborating with you to make sure your student is successful. Please enjoy the last few weeks of summer and we hope to see you all on September 7 at our Family Barbecue.

Sincerely,

Ryan Souliotis
