dena deroseOn, November 2nd, CRLS played host to jazz pianist and vocalist Dena DeRose. Ms. DeRose came to visit us thanks to the Visual and Performing Arts department’s friendship with Harvard University’s Music Department. Ms. DeRose in residence as Harvard’s Office of the Arts visiting jazz artist for the month November. This included the concert “Celebrating Women in Jazz” that featured Dena DeRose in concert with Harvard jazz bands.

Thanks to Mark Olson, the Interim Director of the Harvard Band and Wind Ensemble program, Ms. DeRose came to CRLS to speak with music students and answer questions about her life, career and music. Highlights from the session were sophomore Ishmael Shariff, being called up to the piano to play a ragtime piece he was working on as well as sophomore Hanna Carney singing a duet with Dena. This is sure to be a day that our students won’t soon forget.

Senior music student Chris Colbert appreciated the insight Ms. DeRose gave students on potential paths that they could take in the music industry. “Dena DeRose’s talk with us was very inspiring to me. I loved how she gave us insight into what it was like starting out and how moving across genres helped her learn more about herself.”
