Photo credit: EF Education FirstCongratulations to Team A.H.E.E.P. and Power Saviors for winning the two trips to Iceland with EF in March! Congratulations to the five finalists – all of whom will receive seed money and will be working next spring and summer with the City of Cambridge to implement their ideas:
  1. Team Lightbulbs: A proposed renovation plan for six of Cambridge’s public elementary schools that have been found to be the most energy inefficient. The renovation plans focus on insulating/air-sealing building envelopes and installing geothermal or air-source heat pumps.

  2. Team Greenlight: A proposed partnership with NEST to sell substantially discounted thermostats to families throughout Cambridge. The team estimates that NEST thermostats have the potential to reduce an average home’s heating bill by 15% annually.

  3. Team A.H.E.E.P: A proposed partnership with Mass Save and the Cambridge Housing Authority to deliver “energy efficiency kits” and instruction for residents of the City’s affordable housing properties on how to use them. The team claims that affordable housing facilities are frequently overlooked in municipal energy plans, while the facilities themselves are often big contributors to energy inefficiency.

  4. Team Greenergy: A proposal to invest in and install temperature and light sensors in Cambridge’s school and municipal office buildings.

  5. POPULAR VOTE WINNER – Power Saviors: A proposal to install kinetic energy sensors in floor tiles at CRLS and around Cambridge.
The students should be very proud of the work they did. We hope every student will continue to pursue their projects and we hope they gained valuable skills and experience from participating in this fall’s Glocal Challenge.
